Black Oxide Coating Machiparts For Rust Prevention

Black oxide coating, also known as blackening, is a type of surface treatment that provides a thin layer of black oxide on the surface of a metal. This process is used primarily for ferrous metals, such as steel, iron, and stainless steel, although it can also be applied to other materials. The black oxide coating serves several purposes, including enhancing corrosion resistance, improving aesthetics, and providing mild lubrication.

Description

How does black oxide work?

Black oxide is a finishing process that involves immersing a part in a solution including sodium hydroxide and potassium nitrate. At Hubs, applying black oxide is a six-step process, in which a part is:

1. Run through machining and deburring

2. Cleaned using alkaline solutions

3. Rinsed in water

4. Black-oxidized via immersion in a hot (135-145ºC) alkaline bath for a period of five to 40 minutes, depending on the size of the part

5. Rinsed in water once again

6. Given an after-finish treatment with oil, lacquer, or wax to seal the oxide surface

The benefits of black oxide coating include:

1. Corrosion resistance: The black oxide layer provides a certain level of protection against corrosion and rust. While it may not be as effective as other types of coatings like electroplating or powder coating, it does offer a degree of protection against environmental factors.

2. Aesthetic appeal: Black oxide coating gives the metal a sleek, uniform black appearance, which is often preferred for aesthetic reasons, particularly in industries like firearms, automotive, and consumer goods.

3. Reduced glare: The blackened surface reduces glare and light reflection, making it useful in applications where reflections could be problematic, such as optics, camera equipment, and tools.

4. Mild lubrication: The black oxide layer can have a slight lubricating effect, reducing friction between moving parts. This property can be useful in certain applications where metal-to-metal contact occurs.

5. Minimal dimensional change: The process generally doesn't add significant thickness to the metal part, which is beneficial in applications where tight tolerances need to be maintained.
